Beware the scumbags
September 8th, 2007

I suppose readers of this site might be checking Ebay for any stray Foleos that aren't making their way to the landfill via Palm. Please make sure you follow all the common-sense Ebay guidelines, like reading the text of the auction. (That one probably won't get any bites, but sometimes the wording can be trickier. Be careful.)
Probably not many legitmate devices will make it to auction. Many of the pre-production units have to be sent back to Palm, and the lucky folks who do get to keep their Foleos won't be letting them go. Apparently the device really grows on you.
But I do wonder how much a loose Foleo would go for on Ebay. More than $1500? $2000?
I still wish Palm would consider a fire sale of the units they have sitting around. After lifting the hopes of this niche market–while everyone else mocked us for defending the device–the least Palm could do is allow us to spend the money we had already commited to giving them. They owe us that much.

I bet they go higher than 2k. There are some curious collectors out there with money, not to mention that the Foleo did have some advantages over a regular laptop.

Isn’t there a rule saying they can’t sell them online? Granted, Palm screwed over the entire Foleo developer base and community with this move, so it’s not like anyone has any ethical reasons to obey that agreement.

WTF? What kind of eejit puts up an ebay listing like that?!!?
Oh I’m sure some Foleos will turn up for sale. But very, very quietly. I wouldn’t look at ebay! Also, I would expect prices to be high.
What I’m waiting for — well, I’ll save that for now.

It seems silly to sell/buy such a device for $1000 - $2000 when one could get an ultraportable laptop for as much.

Yes, it is silly, which is why I wouldn’t pay that much, but there are other reasons to own a prototype device that never made it into full production.

If you take a look at whay the Foleo was to offer:
10 inch display
Solid state hard drive
ultra low power cpu (enviromentaly friendly and can be quickly charged for cents on the dollar from a car 12 vpower outlet
2.5 pund slip laptop
All day battery life
Instant On
Word, excell, web, email etc (all MOST of us need to get job DONE)
$500
Show me another machine for this price or even 3 times the price that has this unique (and desireable) qualaties.
I have a $1500 3 pound laptop and It is no replacement for a Foleo. can’t toss it in car glove compartment in case I want to do some work, does not give peace of mind that my expensive machine (with valuable data) is safe at home. Foleo was to be a new freedom in way we could work.
my opinion

Thanks Adam- my sentiments exactly.
On the road for weeks at a time, the Foleo would’ve been in my bag. There’s been a dis-service by not allowing the market to truly discover what the Foleo is about.
Still,it is possible they are tweaking the issues and we will see the reborn Foleo under the new OS after the new year.
