We still want one
September 6th, 2007
Thanks everyone for the nice emails and comments. One message I want to share with you all comes from David, who I think expresses the desire of many readers of this site:
Dear Palm,
There are undoubtedly many in the market who are rejoicing that Palm has decided to focus its efforts on developing a well-rounded operating platform and improving the Treo smartphone. I, for one, applaud Mr. Colligan's commitment to the long-term view and his courage to make a tough decision that he feels is in the best interest of the company.
That said, Palm has managed to rustle up a fairly sizeable market for the Foleo, in which many are pinning for a Foleo even after the decision to cancel the program. Several of us would gladly hand over our dollars for a ‘beta’ version without support from Palm, and regardless of any of the quirks in the software discovered under stress testing.
While I’m not certain that Palm actually produced a sizeable number of Foleo’s in anticipation of its release, I would implore Palm to consider allowing those in the market who supported the Foleo concept in its current state the opportunity to obtain one of the devices.
Respectfully,
The Foleo Community
I don't know either if Palm produced a significant number of these devices. Ben Combee has mentioned that there are not too many out there, and those devices that do exist will be used and adored by the lucky buggers who snagged 'em.
But… if you're still willing to pay full price for a Foleo that may just end up in a landfill, please leave a comment. I'm not sure it'll do much good, but it can't hurt.
My personal offer still stands. I'll pay the 599, and I don't want the rebate or any future support. Just the Foleo.
Heck, I don't even need a manual.
Or a box.
Okay, $649. Final offer.

I’d pay full price, but there’s no chance this is going to happen. At best a few will break their agreements and sell them online.

We are two.
I simply want a Foleo. Keep us informed please
September 6th, 2007 at 2:34 am
That makes three. Definitely dissapointed. Was ready to ditch the laptop for most trips. Email, Internet, LogMeIn remote client. I was golden. Will be waiting impatiently for the industry to get this one right.
September 6th, 2007 at 2:40 am
I most definitely still want one.
September 6th, 2007 at 2:54 am
If there is no possibility of buying one, which are the solutions (alternatives)? And, forgot the Asus EEE please…
September 6th, 2007 at 3:06 am
Vance- Thanks for posting that. I’m definitely on the list of those still hopeful!
September 6th, 2007 at 3:26 am
I strongly encourage you to send this letter to Palm, if you haven’t already. I also strongly recommend that the author NOT use the word “irregardless”. Please use “regardless” instead.
That word bugs me.
Sorry… great letter, though.
September 6th, 2007 at 4:36 am
I want one too!!! i have actually set aside funds for it already
where do i put my name in?
September 6th, 2007 at 4:42 am
I am willing to pay $599 for a completely unsupported Foleo.
September 6th, 2007 at 6:58 am
I would also pay 599 for a box-less, support-less, warranty-less Foleo.
September 6th, 2007 at 7:09 am
I’m willing to pay 599$ as well. No need for support, warranty, or anything like that. Just a Foleo in working order with a power adapter. And may Palm *please* listen to us despite all the rubbish being thrown at them by various geekgadget forums.

I am an eager Foleo customer in waiting. I too had made the decision to spend the money to buy one. A great pity, the cancellation.
September 6th, 2007 at 8:50 am
I’d pay for one, too. I think this would be wonderful PR for the company, but I agree with Saul that it’s very unlikely.
September 6th, 2007 at 11:03 am
Vance- You represent this serious website. If you send an email to Palm or contact the company, let know that many people want the Foleo and we are ready to pay.
I will try to call Palm Customer Service about this, today.
September 6th, 2007 at 11:50 am
I’d pay $599 USD for one too. I was really looking forward to having a Foleo ASAP.
September 6th, 2007 at 2:53 pm
The foleo was the only alternative for me in the micropc class, so I would definitely buy one for the original price.
September 6th, 2007 at 3:29 pm
YES! I’m all over this. Palm can keep the $100 rebate, too.
September 6th, 2007 at 4:11 pm
To answer TurboC’s question about Foleo alternatives: List of Foleo alternatives, anyone?
Good luck getting your Foleo’s, folks.
September 6th, 2007 at 4:14 pm
Please put me on the list for one. Or tell me where the landfill is!

I’m wondering if the early production models (if there were any) ever made it out of China. Since the software hadn’t been finalized, the units were/are probably still sitting in a factory in China.
Imo, best bet of getting your hands on one of these would most likely be near the factory or through Chinese ‘remaindered’ outlet.
One way to cut their losses would be to never actually ship the units to the States.
Just guessing, of course. And, yeah, I still want one, too.
September 6th, 2007 at 6:39 pm
i sorta still want one, but the strength of something like the foleo would really come later when there is a solid base of apps for it. at the moment it doesnt even have a video player to my knowledge, because there won’t be many apps and they will likely still be buggy it wouldn;t really qualify as a good work machine for me anymore but it would definitely still be fun to play around with
September 6th, 2007 at 7:36 pm
I certainly still want one, the sooner the better. I find it incomprehensible that there isn’t an alternative. Surely the need for something like this (light, full sized keyboard, no hard disk, good web browser) is obvious? Even if the Eee were more solidly put together, the small keyboard would ruin it as far as I’m concerned.
September 6th, 2007 at 8:10 pm
This has given me a hell of an idea. It’s not one Palm is bound to take up, however. Will post about it on my blog. Alas, delays. So, tomorrow.
September 6th, 2007 at 10:17 pm
As far as I know, this is the smallest native linux device with vga out. As long as it has ssh and a pdf viewer that can be sent to the vga out, I still want it. I would pay 599 USD for it. I would probably continue to use it for pdf slideshows until a lighter native linux device with vga out (or a successor) came along. I know some have been announced, but they never seem to actually appear on the US market.

foleo prices would be through the roof, with all this speculation and everything. I think I saw one on ebay for $29,000.
But … i want one too. In fact, I’ll take 30 and sell the rest for profit.
September 7th, 2007 at 4:39 pm
I’ll take two at 599. They have a responsibility now to deliver to those who defended them and saved up money.
Funny it was the first Palm product I ever liked. No way I’m going to get excited about their stuff again. They treated the fans like crap.
September 7th, 2007 at 5:46 pm
@roland: ‘the first Palm product I ever liked’
I was thinking the same thing. I should have known that Palm, of all companies, wasn’t going to sell me something I actually wanted to use.
Still, I have a brilliant suggestion for Mr Colligan, if he’s reading these comments. If there are a lot of units sitting around somewhere, why don’t you sell them off in a market outside the US, just to test the waters for the Foleo II? Somewhere like, oh, let’s say France, or the United Kingdom, or Ireland. (I say this as an Irish national, resident in the UK and at present spending a lot of time in France.) Good idea, no?
September 7th, 2007 at 11:44 pm
I want one if it will work with Windows PPC!
September 9th, 2007 at 2:58 am
I still want a Foleo, too. My hubby gave me a card for my birthday yesterday with 6 hundred dollar bills tucked inside. We don’t buy a lot of tech products, but he knew I had wanted a Foleo. Wonder what I’ll look for now.
And no, I will not buy a $600 laptop, for all the reasons this site agrees with.
September 10th, 2007 at 5:11 am
Yes! Count me in!
September 20th, 2007 at 7:30 pm
How I wish I could still get a Foleo, too. I was looking forward spending part of my Christmas bonus on it. :p
September 24th, 2007 at 9:11 pm
Me too…
If you can get one, pls tell me how I can do it?.
No suport, No warranty, ….
